I use pppd to connect my FreeBSD system to a ISP (various).

My file (/etc/ppp/options) is :
modem
crtscts
mtu 296
asycnmap 0xffffffff

I dial with kermit, with a script that logs in and starts
ppp on my system with the command:
/usr/sbin/pppd -silent defaultroute /dev/modem 38400
