The script can be called from devd when a mass storage device appears/disappears. The target audience are all those who do not want or cannot use HAL. I have created a package for all those who wish to try it: http://www.home.hs-karlsruhe.de/~fado0011/automounter-0.9.tbz It provides the script and the manual pages automounter(8) and automounter.conf(5). The first explains how to set everything up, the second how to tweak the behaviour.
