OK, I went ahead too, and installed bitstream-vera on my 4.x machine.
I then configured Firefox to use bitstream-vera for Cyrillic encoding.
Now English and Russian versions of the site look approximately in the
same font size; there's still a difference in the size, but not as much
as before.
