Here is the latest addition to the Artist Spotlight section of The Muse's Muse at http://www.musesmuse.com/artistspotlights.html ----------------------------------------------------------------- Lou Black - Genre: POP "Sophisticated Global Pop." Soulful and personal with a few counter-culture songs thrown in for good measure. Unique and polished blend of melodic pop, blues, folk, & world. "The tone, international flavor, lyrics and vocal quality will recall such luminaries as ...Peter Gabriel, Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed." http://www.loublackmusic.com/ ---- Bud Buckley - Genre: SINGER/SONGWRITER Former NY teacher Bud Buckley has emptied his schoolbag into a new CD, Feel My Love. If Bob Dylan ever managed to swallow Paul Simon, James Taylor and their guitars, it would sound like Bud. His pop style is at times folk/rock or traditional ballad. Whether he's drawing a laugh or a tear, he's a good listen. http://www.budbuckley.com/ ---- Alex Walsh - Genre: SINGER/SONGWRITER "Veering expertly between Westerberg styled smart-guy rock and classic Brit-inspired pop, this is the kind of disc that radio programmers should glom right onto. Each of these tracks is well produced and, thanks to a remarkable roster of musicians, rendered eminently listenable." -- West Coast Performer Magazine http://www.alexwalsh.net/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ S o n g w r i t i n g B o o k R e v i e w: by James Linderman Review of Berklee Music's Online Lyric Writing Course http://www.berkleemusic.com/?pid=298 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If your dream perception of being in college includes frat parties involving clandestine rituals where you pour beer over your best friends' head while wearing a toga…then online learning does not have the potential of really delivering what you're looking for. However, online courses hold some remarkable advantages for those who are looking for an education that propels them forward in their field, yet fits nicely into a contemporary lifestyle. Most of us who are "into" song writing are already fitting our art into a life that involves lots of other priorities. But we would all agree that there is so much we need to know to move our writing forward. I also find it's hard to learn when I'm pulling information from randomly discovered sources all over the net whenever they happen to surface. Berklee College of Music's online song writing course may just be the solution for busy, yet committed, songwriters like you and I. >From September through to mid December I did an academic audit of Berklee's online lyric writing programme that featured three courses to choose from. All three courses were authored by Pat Patterson who has been teaching lyric writing and poetry at Berklee since 1975 and played a central role in developing Berklee's song writing major. Pat Pattison is the world's leading authority on contemporary lyric development and analysis, having authored three of this planets defining texts on the topic. The prospect of gaining online access to Pat's teaching and guidance is simply extraordinary. The first thing I noticed when I first logged onto the virtual campus was how easy it was to find everything on the personal home page they set up for each student. With one click of the mouse, at anytime of day and night, you can access the full set of course materials you are enrolled in from this page. The three lyric courses I audited were "Writing Lyrics to Music", "Writing from a Title" and "Tools and Strategies". Lesson One of "Writing Lyrics to Music" had one of my favourite topics - the placement of stress syllables in a lyric - so I went there just to see what a course on this might involve. Each course is a twelve-week module and each week's worth of materials includes a complete introduction, a comprehensive set of lessons and an assignment. One of the features that I find most helpful is the audio clip that accompanies every example so that students can actually hear the examples and apply their lyric idea to actual music. Students then post their lyric ideas in a thread or discussion page which is then addressed by the course instructor and also by fellow students creating an opportunity for genuine input from a lot of sources. Each course features a syllabus page which introduces the course materials and objectives, lists the required texts and computer requirements and expresses the criteria and regulations concerning assignments, communications and grading. Speaking of grades…You can look up your grades with a click of the mouse from this same page and also read or review archives of the announcements, discussions and chats that have gone on during the twelve weeks of the course. Very cool! At first, I felt a little sneaky going into the chat archive and snooping around but I was assured that only academic auditors, (of which I believe I was the only one) and the dozen or so students in the course have access to any of this material. I found it interesting that the students, in the class I audited, had their first chat September 25th with 274 posts, (124 of which were from the instructor) and by December 8, near the end of the course the final chat had 512 posts (130 provided by the instructor). This leads me to believe that during the twelve weeks of the course some real community gets built here, as students enjoy some opportunities to fellowship, network, co write and experience peer to peer learning to augment the best lyric writing instruction available anywhere in the world. Used By Permission ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For a little change of pace, this months' website is devoted to the "science" of music. The Exploratorium (http://www.exploratorium.edu/music/) offers online movies, exhibits and common questions, such as "Why does my recorded voice sound so strange to me?". And have you ever heard of the term "ear candy"? This is an expression for something sweet sounding...of course what sounds sweet is a relative thing when it comes to music, but the Exploratorium discusses the opposite of ear candy -- earworms! Ever had that annoying part of a song stuck in your head for the longest time and wonder what is actually happening in your brain? The German psychologist James Kellaris Ohrwurm studied this very phenomenon, coming up with some interesting theories. The website also offers up some unusual interactive pages. You can play the drums, create your own loops from various "step dancing" elements, where a person becomes an instrument by clapping hands, stamping and chanting. It's much too difficult to describe here, you'll have to go the website and try it out for yourself! Learn about mixing and about natural reverb in a way you may not have understood before. And just how do opera singers hold those notes for soooo long? Of course, if you want to get away from music altogether the Exploratorium has much more to offer, calling itself "The museum of science, art and human perception". You may very well get lost for a few hours exploring our universe and all of its wonders, so fill up on turkey, enjoy your family and friends, and THEN sit down and take some time for yourself. And while you're at it, have a wonderful holiday season! ****** Irene Jackson is a performing songwriter from Victoria, BC in Canada. Aside from writing, recording and performing, she also maintains a website for songwriters that includes tips, articles and more links of interest. Her eagerly anticipated CD "Catnip" is finally here, and her earlier recordings have had attention everywhere from Japan to South America. This is her first article for us. Feel free to visit her columnist page at http://www.musesmuse.com/col-jeanniedeva.html and ask her questions you might have about getting the most out of your vocals! She's one heck of a teacher. :) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Years ago, I learned to "make due" with a very limited vocal range. True, I could really belt out a song, but the song had to stay contained within a small number of notes. After a while, I realized there was more that I wanted to be able to express and for that, needed to have more "high" notes in my vocabulary. However, therein lay the problem. My upper range was a complete embarrassment – and forget about being able to sing smoothly from low to high! I did not even think it possible to expand my range. I, like so many others, believed that you were born with the voice you had and I would just have to learn to deal with what little range I had at my disposal. When I began to research the voice and create a new approach to voice training, I was my own first client. I was so sure that I could not expand my range and get past my "breaking point" that I did not include this as a goal for myself. I was truly surprised when I began to sing smoothly further and further into previously unknown vocal territory! This led me into additional research, to better understand this phenomenon and its solutions, some of which I will share with you in this article. Many singers find their lack of range and lack of confidence holds them back from being the expressive singer they wish themselves to be. Still others have come to believe that the "breaking point" in their range is a natural part of a person’s voice. This belief alone causes people to invent ways of hiding or maneuvering around an aspect of their voice they wish was not there. But is it really true that this "breaking point" is a natural part of a person's voice? Defining Terms To start off, let's define the term "breaking-point." Breaking-point, otherwise known as "register break" is defined as those few notes which are the cross-over from your lower to your upper register. In classical voice training, this is called the "passage" or passagio (passageway between two sections of vocal range). Usually this is one to three notes which suddenly become weak and are difficult to control. Though there are some variations, this is normally experienced from an E to an F# over Middle C for men. For women it is either the same notes an octave above, or a Bb to a C# above Middle C. Above these notes, the singer may be able to regain a sense of vocal control and recapture some vocal quality. The register of notes above the "breaking-point" is often thought of by men as their "falsetto" range and by women as their "head voice." The Cause - Physical or Mental? Singing is both a mental and physical process. When you think you have to do something to achieve a certain note, and if what you think you have to do is actually not what your body needs to do, the conflict can cause tension and a poor result. The outcome will never be as good as it could be if your thoughts are in harmony with your body’s natural and automatic sound functions. An example of this is thinking you have to reach "up" for higher notes when in fact all the pitches are created in the same location in your throat. In actuality, to achieve faster vibrations (higher pitches), the back of your voice box tilts down into the center of the throat so that the vocal folds can stretch. So thinking "up" is contrary to the physical motion of the voice box, which can confuse your body and cause tension.
