I got your message and advise about configuring Sawfish, but its really strange here. When I installed gnome, I didn't select any other window manager (as I knew that Sawfish is installed as the default window manager anyways. I was able to run the "Configure Sawfish Window Manager" tool as root after recompiling Sawfish (as per Joe Marcus Clarke's advisory), but I am not able to do so as a non-root user. I get the same "beep" noise and nothing happens. Sawfish is selected as "current" in the gnomecontrolcenter panel when I start it, so its already running! If there is any log / or config files that would assist you, do ask and I'll get that off to you. Thanks again for the reply.
