Startx, of course, is the shortcut to startxfce4. I'm using a display manager so I'm not sure, but could be a timing issue. startx should not be a symlink to startxfce4 though, it should be a script starting X and it's required parts and launching startxfce4 as it's last action. In fact the default startx script is part of the xinit package and should n= ot be modified. It can be configured via ~/.initrc for each user.
