Correct me if I'm wrong. But the "end product" you are speaking of
is the binary package, which has a name of its own and is defined
in the ports Makefile.

Its nearly completely meaningless for the enduser if the directory
name was postgresql or postgresql7. My personal opineon is, that
postgresql7 and postgresqlN is more informative, since it shows
you already during directory listing, that it deals with version
7 of the postgresql database.
