Well,
You got through - isn't it ?
I don't have the exact posts but I bet that you would find in the
archives of -current a more step-by-step way to upgrade.
Your way is a bit over-ambitious, going straight from an old 2.2 version
to the most recent 3.0 (considering all the changes that have been
made).
I would have first upgraded my machine via cvsup to the latest
2.2-Stable version, then upgraded to 3.0-Release (via aout-to-elf), then
once more upgraded to 3.0-Stable (this is exactly what I wanted to do
until I crashed my disk trying to have two complete FreeBSD partitions
on the same disk - I then installed a fresh 3.0-Release and I recovered
most of my data from a backup)
Furthermore, I you upgrade from source, beware of changes in /etc
