Perhaps this will help tracking down the problem: I built my box (OR840, 2xPIII 733, AHA2940UW) from a 4.3 distribution on June 23rd and upgraded to -stable on the same day. An SMP kernel compiled on the 23rd does not have the noted behaviour and I AM using an mfs-mounted /tmp. Later kernels (I have done several CVSups since) all lock up after a few minutes.
