Every su (to whatever user) causes $HOME to be set, so you can always differentiate between a -l and a plain su by placing stuff in ~/.cshrc vs. ~/.login. The first will be evaluated for each su, the second only for su -l. Don't blame us for the ksh-style shells not offering a similar mechanism as ~/.cshrc. Tell this to Dave Korn. $ENV sucks big rocks, and has been invented by a time when there was already enough experience with a working .cshrc.
