My mistake.. pkgdb -fu (not portsdb -fu) is what I was thinking of. I used to 
get the same conflict,. I think between firefox and gramps, and I would just 
install whichever one was asking to be installed right over the other. 
Unfortunately, that method had a tendency to break other packages. Changing 
fam dependents to gamin dependency solved the problem for me. KDE (which 
wants fam) works just fine with gamin instead.
