I had no problems whatsoever installing either 3.4-RELEASE or the
4.0-20000307 snapshot on a pc164 alpha system, however I can't get the
new system to boot (I'm using the most recent SRM firmware from
gatekeeper.dec.com).

Doing a "show dev" in SRM confirms that my hard disk is DKA0, but I've
tried the following without success:

boot dka0
boot dka0 -fi /kernel

Both of the above commands yield the following error:

======================================================
block 0 of dka0.0.0.9.0 is a valid boot block
reading 15 blocks from dka0.0.0.9.0
bootstrap code read in
base = 180000, image_start = 0, image_bytes = 1e00
initializing HWRPB at 2000
initializing page table at 172000
initializing machine state
setting affinity to the primary CPU
jumping to bootstrap code
Loading /boot/loader

halted CPU 0

halt code = 2
kernel stack not valid halt
PC = 1004080391d248
======================================================

Searching the archives brings up a couple of similar messages, but
unfortunately no answers that I could see.

I come from the Linux world and have no experience with FreeBSD, so I
don't know for certain if my boot commands are correct (ie, missing
flags or the wrong kernel filename--please be gentle if that's the case
:-) )

Thanks,
Mike
