I just tried to fix a botched 4.0 RELEASE install by reinstalling the bootloader ONLY (the bootloader didn't install). After that, I got the following error: man: unable to find the file /etc/manpath.config As well as _secure_path: cannot stat /etc/login.conf: Permission denied These errors were both caused by 0700 permissions on the /etc directory. To fix: chmod go+rx /etc I saw a few questions about this in the archive, which were leading in the right direction, but none of them gave the full answer. No answer needed: just fodder for the mail archives. -- Bryan K.
