I use amd to mount CD-ROMs and floppies automatically. It took ages to get the config file right, but it works pretty well now. The amd manual is somewhat cryptic, to say the least. There is another paper on it somewhere in /usr/share/doc that is a little more helpful. If you are truly stuck I can send you my config files -- unfortunately they are on the wrong end of a dialup link just now.
