Well I prefer ${PREFIX} since that means you end up putting all of your '3rd
party' stuff (or as much of it as you can sanely convert) into the one place..
ie by default all your 3rd party stuff lives in /usr/local...

And there are already a lot of 'X11' apps which don't live in /usr/X11R6.

I think leaving the 'base system' uncluttered is a good idea lest something
gets overwritten by a port.
