That's because "someone's" mailbox should be owned by "someone". I think the behaviour is quite normal, because in any case sendmail wouldn't/shouldn't be able to write to the mailbox if it is owned by root: "someone" won't have the appropriate permissions. I think it would be worth investigating why someone's mailbox is not owned by himself.
