Hmmm... normally, you'ld just leave any extra NICs unconfigured. Not plugging a cable in generally makes the OS believe the NIC is down. You can tell the OS the i/f shouldn't be configured by: ifconfig_bge0="NOAUTO" but that will probably still leave the i/f up if a cable is attached. In this case, you could try using both of: ifconfig_bge0="down" ipv6_ifconfig_bge0="ifdisabled down" (rc.conf syntax for IPv6 is different in CURRENT, but I assume you're not using that.)
