Well I boot with win98 floppy and I have pretty simple vmware
configuration. It looks like this

#!/usr/local/lib/vmware/bin/vmware
config.version = 2

# Floppy
floppy0.present = TRUE
floppy0.fileName = /dev/fd0
floppy0.startConnected = TRUE

# Memory size
memsize = 32

# Log file
log.fileName = /home/staff/yurtesen/vmware/win98/win98.log

# Hints
guestOS = "win98"

The windows 98 starts to boot normally and the startup menu comes
then I do a shift-f5 to skip loading drivers etc. Then I see

Microsoft(R) Windows 98
   (C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1998


thats all it doesnt get any further, I tried it with different
configurations when I had hard drive etc. configured but it is always the
same.

I tried to boot from a real floppy and a image file later on. It didnt
help at all. My friend told me that he had the same problem and he couldnt
solve it but he could install win2000 instead
