My suggestion went the other way around: I did *not* compile pcm as a
module, but directly into the kernel instead.

The strange thing is that upon my first inspection of the
mixer-initialisation code I cannot find any reason as to why it won't
work. Perhaps someone can try the hint approach I described in my
first post and send his/her results. Maybe I'm just plain doing
something wrong...
