Some of the previous versions were known to dump core. I assume this tells that mail stayed in MTA queue (tempfailed), and MTA repeatedly (with increasing time between attempts) was trying to pass mail through a content filter, which failed every time. This is a normal and expected behaviour in fatal conditions. I hope the reporter was not observing repeated calls to file(1) in the same amavisd session, which would be wrong.
