It did not occur with FreeBSD 4.x running on about a dozen of clients.

(In the meantime, we also switched to a better network as opposed to the
original one with about 10% package loss, so I cannot authoritatively
state whether the basic problem has gone, but on the other hand I have
no way of reproducing it, so I guess the PR should be closed.)
