my demented scoop:

maybe this has been said, i haven't been keeping up on this one, but i bet
gates kept apple alive as his excuse to antitrust suits.  "see?  there's
competition for ya..."  and plus, as one of the largest shareholders now,
he'll make money whenever the competition does.
