Hi,

To be sure, I always do bare bones install from ISO,
to make sure everything is in sync. During the evaluation
of the various versions since June, i've always
done a fresh install and kept several previous system disks
in case I need to refer back to any of them. I never use
update at all, since it only takes an hour or so to reinstall
from scratch. Ok, you then have to start again building
packages of interest, but i'm doing this on a part time basis
and time is not really an issue.

512 Mb may be a bit light for building gcc. The v215
here came with 8Gb memory, so never any problem in that
regard. When I built vnc, the following packages built,
including gcc (4.8.5.2), binutils etc, all of which
built without issue, though it does take a few hours.
