The drivers are copied to prevent complications from periodic integrations from HEAD. The amount of changes may be significant and arbitrary during the experimentation phase making conflict resolution a huge pain otherwise. These drivers are chosen for the simple reason that they have sufficient to adequate to good public documentation and that I have them readily available in my local test bench for fast turnaround times. Once a winning strategy has emerged and is accepted by the kernel hacker community all other drivers get converted/adjusted too.
