Gas is part of ginutils now, and I couldn't get gnu ld to work with my 2.0 system; now that I've got 2.1 I'll need to rebuild my GNU 2.7 tools so I'll be banging away at this on the weekend. If gas seems to cure the problem of .weak symbols, I'll mail to this list.
