Sorry, that didn't come out quite right.  The Java app that I was trying to get
to work only works on the aforementioned operating systems since it had
C libraries to support I/O only on those platforms.  I do not believe that it uses
the JavaComm port on those operating systems and would have to be
re-written to take advantage of them.  The app was originally written for
the 1.1.8 JDK.
