I did tried Xfce4 few days ago and it ran just fine on Sunday's 5.1- CURRENT. The ~/.xinitrc looks like this: xfce-mcs-manager xfwm4 --daemon xftaskbar4 & xfdesktop & exec xfce4-panel Can you start the X without any of WM?
