I was recently poking around on the Microsoft FTP server. They have a more advanced "plug-n-play spec that you could actually code to. I also found a commercial utility that's about 18k (from I don't know who) called "identify" that can probe the bejesus out of IDE drives (going so far as to spit out manufacture dates).
