I realized there was one other difference between my home and work machine. At home I had used "WITH_NEW_XORG=YES" (and "WITH_KMS=YES") before I ended up buying an nvidia card to finally get things working. So, I tried the same at work....took a while to rebuild recursive (partly because at one point started an upward-recursive).... but now things are working again with 304.51.
