Hm.  It's possible the package was truncated and needs to be rebuilt.  Try
emailing the maintainer (ache@freebsd.org) and inform him of the problem.
Make sure you are downloading in 'binary' mode too.  The packages are on
ftp.freebsd.org in /pub/FreeBSD/packages.  Astrolog is probably in
...../packages/x11/astrolog-*.tgz.

Yes.  The packages are pre-built binaries.  The ports build directly from
the source.

I've had generally good experience with packages, with some notable
exceptions (such as xemacs).
