One legitimate use-case is talking to single-chip embedded CPUs, eg an Atmel AVR or Mega, or a PIC controller. Very limited code space means that the networking implementation may be limited to just UDP/IP, and PPP is way too big, but SLIP is trivially doable. -bmw
