I have one of those I use in my sony Z505HS

Are you using /dev/cuaa4, rather than /dev/sio4 ? sio is the raw serial
device, IIRC, not a callout device. For outgoing connections you should
be using /dev/cuaa[0-9].


I don't use any special init strings, terminal works just fine;
