I'd like to add to this.  The abiove strategy is great for small to mid
sized programs, but when you start getting into the heavyweights like
*TeX, KDE/GNOME, etc. it is best to put them in their own directory
hierarchy, with their own bin/, lib/, etc. directories.  Example:
/usr/local/kde/bin, /usr/local/kde/lib, ...
