And the ports install binaries by default in ...... bingo /usr/local/bin What you which(1) tell is that /usr/bin is the first and /usr/local/bin in after it in in your shell's PATH. So try /usr/local/bin/gcc -v Note that it is not a good idea to over-write you system's gcc, as in FreeBSD there is a very tight integration between the compiler and the system. Some of the gcc ports provide a knob to install over "base" gcc and probably they are tested to work, I don't know. % /usr/bin/gcc -v Using built-in specs.
