Also you can just:
post-install:
${MKDIR} ${STAGEDIR}/var/db/whatever
${TOUCH} ${STAGEDIR}/var/db/whatever/.keep_me
pkg-plist:
/var/db/whatever/.keep_me
@dirrmtry /var/db/whatever
