Compiling a kernel is a "right of passage" for most FreeBSD users. If you don't know how to do something that simple, there's a lot of things that will confuse you even further about the system when you're dealing with the guts of it. Greg Lehey's "The Complete FreeBSD" does a good job of discussing how and why to recompile a kernel, and I'm sure there are tutorials on the various BSD support sites out there describing the process as well.
