Check to see that PINE is pointed at your ISP's Usenet server (usually it's news.yourisp.com, but that's not a universal practice). Even if this setting in PINE is correct, your ISP's newsfeed may not receive the FreeBSD groups. There are many free Usenet servers on the Internet that do receive those groups, though; search the web for one of the free Usenet server lists.
