So, yes, servlets are working well (with the additional features that 2.2 brings) and JSP's are also working well. I haven't encountered any problems, apart from a few minor issues with Tomcat 3.1 that are unrelated to the JVM... my advice would be to go for Tomcat 3.2 (if its not out of beta 5 or whatever yet, I'd still go with it for the security, bug and speed fixes and general indications from the tomcat list).
