>From http://www.futuresouth.com/~fullermd/freebsd/bsd/bsdvlinux.14 I infer that the second edition of "The Complete FreeBSD" by Greg Lehey has a paragraph about FreeBSD vs. Linux. (My apologies.) Why is this issue so taboo? (Greg: "That's a hot potato. A lot of people get fanatical about the question. Still, I've just had to write this up for the new edition of 'The Complete FreeBSD', so here goes [...]") Being able to run Linux binaries on FreeBSD helps a lot (having commercial programs in mind). However, for programmers that want/have to use commercial (Linux-) compilers in addition to the free GNU compilers, it doesn't suffice. I guess, I end up running FreeBSD (which I love) and Red Hat (which I need?) on my box, which may not be too bad :) PS I'm aware of the port devel/linux_devel. But, honestly, compiling and running my own Linux binaries with the help of a substantial amount of Linux binaries and libraries in FreeBSD's Linux compatibility mode seems somewhat ridiculous to me. (No offense. It's great that I probably *could* do it after all.) --------------------------------------- Nikolas Kauer, kauer@pheno.physics.wisc.edu To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-advocacy" in the body of the message
