Subject: 2.2.2-RELEASE fake install

I'm trying to attempt a "fake" install with 2.2.2-RELEASE.
I have a spare disk that I disklabeled and
created file systems on with newfs, and then mounted up
on a mount point. While running on my V2.1 disk, I
downloaded the OS from ftp.freebsd.org and then extracted
2.2.2-RELEASE down to the mount point. I created a valid
etc/fstab under the root mount point for 2.2.2, but I am
unable to use MAKEDEV to create the devices I need. The
2.2.2 /dev directory comes pre-built with sd0 sd1 sd2 sd3,
but I need sd5. Attempts to make the device under the
2.2.2 mount point return the following error from the
scsictl variable in MAKEDEV.

./MAKEDEV: arithmetic expression: syntax error: "1 << 29"

Is this a compatability problem running 2.2.2 MAKEDEV under
2.1? I notice MAKEDEV has changed considerably between
versions.

Are there any other pre or post install tasks the install
performs that need to be performed?

Thanks for any help.
Jon
