Maybe you should delete the /var/db/rpm directory after deinstalling the rpm port to make sure you're in a sane situation... this assumes you don't have any other rpm based software installed anymore. Since you've experimented alot I suggest to remove the /compat/linux directory completely before you install the linux_base again.
