Just one observation...it seems that a "saver" or "ssaver" would
be a much more suitable name for the pseudo-device than "splash".
I see the name "splash" and I have no idea what it might be;
"saver" I have some good guesses for given the context.

Subtle terminology differences like than make the difference
between a user guessing right and a user having to dig through
documentation and grumbling about how cryptic Unix is.
