Note this isn't the same as kern/45574, I eventually do get a login prompt, it sounds like he does not. When it works/doesn't work, I don't see any difference in the dmesg output, so that's not too useful, and I haven't found any kind of pattern as to why it works sometimes. A GENERIC kernel also exhibits this behavior, and this works fine in 4.7.
