Given that you are using csh(1) (which is > root's default shell on FreeBSD) you should add such an entry in ~/.cshrc > if it wasn't just a typo, you might also want to re-read man ls. as written, the -h switch is a useless flag. it requires -l to provide effect. epi ;) .
