That's pretty weird, because I just installed a test kernel, rebooted a few minutes ago and got: $ tty ; w /dev/ttyve 3:44PM up 2 mins, 2 users, load averages: 0.10, 0.06, 0.02 USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE WHAT root v0 - 3:43PM 1 -sh (sh) sheldonh ve - 3:43PM - w Does this happen if you clobber /var/log/utmp and /var/log/wtmp and then reboot?
