Noone is stopping -anyone- from doing the Debian/ubuntu thing and breaking off snapshots of FreeBSD to roll in a slightly different way. This is happening with PCBSD, for example. The project is doing what it can with what people are contributing. If you'd like a distribution supported for longer then offer to help maintain it.
