Swap? Are you doing this from an install floppy? Does it happen immediately on starting the newfs or after some processing? I notice that you found a limit of around 27GB, while someone else (with a different but similarly large drive) found a limit around 32GB. Yet others have created Vinum arrays with file systems double this.
