I have no idea whether it's cups or the system, but I see that r386611 was made the next day. It looks unlikely, though, since it was a pretty trivial change. to add CPE which I don't believe should touch the actual code. (I could be wrong, though.) I don't print a lot, so the problem could have popped up a while later.
