I have no problem with that, but both my drives are UDMA100 only (Seagate Barracuda and a slightly sick IBM DTLA). What version of FreeBSD are you running? Have you tried doing atacontrol mode 0 udma133 udma133 or: atacontrol mode 0 udma100 udma100 but you have to have a recent system to have atacontrol (-STABLE, i think?)
