I managed to get a new HD and installed 13.0-CURRENT on the machine, checked
out the latest /usr/src, recompiled the kernel and compiled
drm-devel-kmod-5.4.63.
The module gets loaded and the system does not hang up.

I still have to try X or Wayland
(currently compiling xorg)

Eventually, I could provide access to the machine if there is interest.
